The Story Behind “Be Brave Like Volnovakha”

The story of this special inscription began in 2022.

On the occasion of the Day of Ukrainian Statehood, ANTONOV joined the “Be Brave Like Ukraine” campaign in order to honor the courage and resilience of Ukrainians who defended their cities during Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Beginning on July 28, 2022, ten ANTONOV aircraft were associated with Ukrainian Hero Cities and received individual “BE BRAVE LIKE…” names. The An-158 UR-EXJ was dedicated to Volnovakha.

Volnovakha, a city in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, had already received the honorary distinction “Hero City of Ukraine” on March 6, 2022. Presidential Decree No. 111/2022 recognized the courage, mass heroism and resilience demonstrated in the defense of Ukrainian cities against Russian aggression. Volnovakha was named together with Hostomel, Mariupol, Kharkiv, Kherson and Chernihiv.

Fighting for Volnovakha began immediately after the full-scale Russian invasion on February 24, 2022. The city came under Russian occupation in March 2022.

For this reason, “BE BRAVE LIKE VOLNOVAKHA” is much more than a decorative aircraft marking. It commemorates the courage and resilience associated with the city and forms part of ANTONOV’s effort to carry the story of Ukraine and its Hero Cities around the world.
