HISTORY OF THE AIRCRAFT

The Antonov An-10 “Ukraina” was the first experimental prototype of a new four-engine turboprop passenger aircraft developed under the direction of Oleg Antonov.

Development began in late 1955. The project initially carried the internal designation “Product U”, with the letter “U” standing for “Universal”.

The first experimental aircraft received the name “Ukraina” and the registration СССР-У1957, written internationally as USSR-U1957.

The Antonov An-10 “Ukraina” made its maiden flight in Kyiv on 7 March 1957. It took off from the airfield of the Kyiv Aviation Plant in Sviatoshyn. The flight-test crew was led by test pilot Yakov Vernikov.

During factory and state testing, the aircraft’s design was refined, including modifications to its wing and tail assembly. The results of these tests formed the basis for the subsequent production version of the Antonov An-10.

In July 1958, the Antonov An-10 was presented at the Brussels World’s Fair, where it received a diploma and a Grand Gold Medal. Regular passenger services with production An-10 aircraft began in 1959.

Thanks to its spacious passenger cabin, good take-off and landing performance and ability to operate from unpaved airfields, the An-10 became an important part of the Aeroflot passenger fleet during the 1960s.

The Antonov An-10 received the NATO reporting name “Cat”. This designation was used by NATO to identify the aircraft type and was not an official Soviet name for the aircraft.
